Role Purpose:
The Senior Electrical Design Engineer, will lead and deliver technically robust electrical designs for projects ranging from LV up to 132kV. This role involves hands-on design, reviewing the work of others, leading technical studies, and mentoring junior engineers. You’ll also provide guidance across the team on complex power system studies and ensure compliance with DNO/IDNO requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver and review HV/LV electrical designs up to 132kV
- Ensure all design work complies with current UK legislation and electrical safety regulations
- Conduct EMT and RMS simulations (e.g., using DIgSILENT, PSCAD)
- Perform advanced power system studies including protection, discrimination, cable sizing, power flow, and short circuit analysis
- Prepare and review grid compliance studies (G5/5, P28, FRT, reactive power, etc.)
- Specify HV switchgear and accessories for substations
- Provide technical support for ICP connections and manage design processes
- Guide, mentor, and evaluate junior designers and external consultants
- Maintain strong communication with operational teams, project managers, and clients
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (minimum)
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or actively working toward it)
- Minimum 5 years' experience in the electricity industry, with hands-on design up to 33kV (preferably 132kV)
Desirable:
- Master’s or PhD in Power Systems Engineering
- IOSH or equivalent H&S qualification
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
- Experience in earthing system design
- Previous project management experience in utility infrastructure
